This Issue About Us |
To our dear readers: Hi everyone, Maegan here. It's been ten months since we began this humble little publication. As cliche as it sounds, it seems like only yesterday that Jessica messaged me on Myspace to ask if I wanted to write with her. Soon after gathering up whatever people we knew, we formed this little group who have put countless hours of unpaid mental, emotional, and sometimes even physical labor into making us into what we are today. I thank each and every one of our staff members for that. As time went on, we ran into various complications. That's expected since as a group, we had no experience what-so-ever in journalism, in public or media relations or even in webdesign. Because this was strictly a volunteer effort, there was no way we could expect the staff to do write an article a day or anything like that, so we were forced to make this a monthly released magazine. As the summer came, for some of us that meant working either part-time or full-time, for others it meant relaxing and focusing completely on the magazine. Unfortunately, most of us couldn't find the time to actually work much on the magazine, much less relax. This came to be the one big summer issue that you saw back in August. Staff members came and went. Some moved back and forth from school to home, others changed jobs which made them move to a different city. Unfortunately, the magazine had to suffer for it, and we honestly apologize for that happening. However, after several extensive meetings, discussions and maybe even a few arguments, we've come to the decision that changes need to be made. You see, Jessica, the co-founder and original Editor-in-Chief, can no longer remain in the position she was originally put in. She recently got a job in August as a copy editor for an advertising and publishing company. Because of this, she had to move away and concentrate completely on that. It's a very demanding job, being copy editor, so there was no way that she could do both. We're all very happy for her because this is a big step in a different direction towards achieving her dream. The secondary decision that Jessica had to make as life presented choices and problems was not only whether or not to continue being involved with Speakerphone Magazine, but also whether or not to close the whole thing down. When she originally presented the idea, the staff was in an uproar (okay, so maybe not that extreme, but we sure didn't like the idea). After more discussions, we came to the conclusion that the rest of us care way too much about this magazine to ever close it down unless it was completely necessary. And to us, it absolutely was not. So instead of closing Speakerphone Magazine, Jessica handed the entire publication to me, putting me in charge of everything. She'll still be writing from time to time whenever she gets the chance, but from here on in, I am now the Editor-in-Chief of Speakerphone Magazine When I originally started writing this letter, I wasn't sure if I should just say it straight up and that's it or if I should explain exactly what's going on. Clearly, I decided for the latter because I think it is important that you all know it wasn't that we kicked her out in an angry fury. We all mutually came to a decision for changes and this is what we opted for. I will do my best to carry on as Jess would, and hopefully make this magazine everything that we had dreamed it would be since the beginning.
Thank you,
